Virginia Tech Shuts Out Rider 4-0

Rider University failed to take advantage of its power play opportunities while Virginia Tech shook off a number of penalties to win, 4-0.

The Hokies opened the scoring with a goal from Doug MacDonald at 7:55 in the first period to make the score 1-0 Virginia Tech, with Alexander Hashmi picking up the assist. Virginia Tech never looked back.

The Hokies excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Virginia Tech accumulated 32 shots on goal, and the Hokies were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, racking up 18 penalty minutes.

Brian Peak also scored for Virginia Tech, with more assists coming from Alec Burgman and Tyler Nolan, each chipping in one and Greg Kubrak and Felipe Rodriguez contributing two each.

Rider put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Virginia Tech to score on any of its five power plays. The Broncs put 21 shots on net during the contest.

Virginia Tech's Tanner Jones stopped 21 shots out of the 21 that he faced to record the shutout. Nathan Kholodenko recorded 28 saves for Rider University. The Broncs incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
